The IGU argued that natural gas is “well positioned as a force of resilience” to manage those risks, providing reliable, flexible and affordable supply while supporting decarbonisation when combined with carbon capture technology. Gas also offers “insurance for power systems,” the report said, by providing dependable backup and long-duration energy storage when intermittent renewable output falls short. LNG projects face potential delays and cost overruns linked to trade policies, shipping route disruptions and tighter climate rules. The IGU urged targeted investment across upstream production, transport, LNG terminals and storage, even under the most ambitious 1.5-degrees Celsius climate scenarios. Risk mitigation measures should include expanding gas storage, diversifying sources to reduce geopolitical exposure, integrating low-carbon gases such as hydrogen and biomethane, and building flexible infrastructure that can be repurposed as energy systems evolve, it said.
