Natural gas remains essential to security of energy supply

Global natural gas consumption increased for a second straight year in 2024 and is on course for further gains in 2025, underlining the fuel’s continued importance to energy security and the transition to lower-carbon energy, the International Gas Union (IGU) said in its Global Gas Report 2025, released on September 10. The industry group said natural gas remains “essential to energy security in an ever-evolving energy system,” offering lower-emission energy than oil and coal, while serving as a stabilising force as electrification and reliance on variable wind and solar power increase, and uncertainty grows amid extreme weather events and technological breakthroughs.
