Worldwide electricity generation rose 4% to 31,256 TWh in 2024, exceeding the decade-long average growth rate of 2.6% and more than double overall energy demand growth. Over half of the increase came from renewables.China accounted for about half the global rise, with power demand jumping 6.4% to 10,087 TWh – roughly twice the UK’s entire output. Over the past decade China has added generation capacity equal to Europe’s current production. Brown TÜRKMENENERGIÝA Natural gas is increasingly viewed as a core component of a resilient energy system rather than merely a “bridging fuel”. described China as having “the most electrified energy system of any advanced economy”, driven largely by low-carbon additions. Electricity generation grew in all regions: up 5.4% in Asia-Pacific, 2.2% in North America, 1.5% in Europe, 2.7% in the CIS region, 5.3% in the Middle East, 2.9% in South and Central America and 4% in Africa. Extreme weather, including record temperatures in Europe and North America, accounted for about 60% of the  increase in global electricity demand. Rising power needs from AI and cloud computing data centres – especially in the US and China – and a 25% jump in electric-vehicle sales also contributed. Wayth called the growing role of electricity “structural”.
